My Story:
I think I have a typical story…I was very athletic back in my teen years. I played soccer, baseball, and track and coached an U12 soccer team for 3 years. I was very busy with several sports and kept very active. I could basically eat whatever I wanted, and a lot of it, and would never gain any weight. I was 6′ 1" as a freshman, but I only weighed about 145 lbs. I was pretty tall, but I was super skinny.
Skinny was not exactly the adjective I was going for back in high school though. I was always trying to get bigger. So all through high school and college, and even off and on till just a few months ago, I was going to the gym regularly and drinking my typical protein shakes. I just never seemed to see any major results. I would always plateau at a certain weight and could never seem to make any significant gains.
Once I got older and got my first corporate job, I wasn’t nearly as active as I was when I was younger. Plus, my metabolism started changing as I got older, so I was no longer able to eat whatever I wanted and not gain any weight. We all go through this as we age, so a steady exercise routine and a healthy diet are even more important as we get older as those days of pigging out on chips, sodas, cookies, french fries, etc and not gaining a pound are long gone.
I was drinking my fair share of beers and wasn’t eating the best foods I could consistently. And overtime, I started noticing a little beer belly developing. I have 2 kids under 5, and life just started to get away from me. Before I knew it, my nice flat stomach of high school had turned into a bulging beer belly…what the heck happened?!?!
I knew enough was enough, and had to make a change. Obviously just going to the gym a couple days a week, going through the motions, and lifting some weights was not working for me. Lifting weights had actually never really worked for me as I wasn’t much bigger than I was in high school. I was seeking an actual plan of attack. I was lifting weights, but I wasn’t following a plan created by a fitness expert. I knew what I was eating was crucial to my success as well, so I wanted something that not only included the workouts, but also some sort of nutrition plan as well.
I had seen the infomercials for P90X for several months. I thought this would be the perfect program for me as I could do everything from home. I knew the process of driving myself to the actual gym to was a big reason for my lack of consistency. If I could workout from home, I knew I could be much better about working out regularly. Plus, the nutrition plan was included and it would show me exactly what types of food I could eat and when to eat them to complement my workouts which would hopefully get me the results I had been wanting for years.
I got P90X and finally got started on April 1st of 2010. I am kicking myself that I didn’t get started sooner, and I have visions of how much different my life would have turned out if I had P90X back in high school. My body has changed significantly. I am so much stronger and leaner now. I saw better results in just a couple months than I had in years going to my local gym. The combination of the workouts along with a proper nutrition plan were the complete package to really help me begin getting ripped.
Plus, the 90 days is an easily manageable amount of time for just about anyone. When I was just doing my thing at the gym, I never had a goal or end date in mind. With P90X, you have an actual start and end date and the goal is to complete the full 90 days. When you can break up your workouts into specific amounts of time, I think it is much easier to complete the workout. On day 60, I knew I just had 30 more days to go…I knew I could push through this and finish strong…and I did. At the gym, I was just lifting on a Tues or whatever with no end in sight. The 90 days really motivated me to get started and make it all the way to the end. I believe goals are key to your fitness success, and P90X gives you that by pushing yourself to make it to the end.

- It’s much more fun to work out with Tony and the gang than all by myself at the gym. I rarely ever worked out with a friend or someone else to motivate and push me through my workouts. Tony is right there with you during your P90X workouts, and he definitely motivated me to try and keep up with him and his other ripped buddies. I never had that extra motivation at the gym, but P90X really got me to push myself in ways the gym never could.
- True muscle confusion with P90X. I knew about muscle confusion, but at the gym I was pretty much switching from lifting light weight to heavy weight. The problem was I was still just lifting weights…not a huge variety there. With P90X, you are going from heavy lifting to Plyo X….that is a complete 180, and true muscle confusion. You will be lifting one day, and throwing kicks and punches with Kenpo X the next. Lifting some more again, and then Yoga X the day after that. Your body can’t help but see results and transform into something you have only dreamed about because your body is going to be going through completely different workouts day after day.
- Tony is a pretty cool and funny dude. I want to hang out with people like that. Tony keeps the workouts fresh and funny every day. I looked forward to pressing play and working out with him.
